Idiom production drills
Goal
Train active idiom production under realistic constraints: time, context, and register.
Drill 1: Context swap
Pick 3 idioms and use each in:
- a casual message
- a neutral explanation
- a formal paraphrase
Drill 2: One-minute response
Choose a topic (work stress, housing, education).
Speak or write for one minute using exactly 2 idioms and 2 neutral equivalents.
Drill 3: Repair and rewrite
Take an over-idiomatic paragraph and rewrite it:
- version A: balanced colloquial
- version B: neutral formal
Drill 4: Debate insertion
During a short argument paragraph:
- opening sentence: no idiom
- middle: one idiom for stance
- conclusion: neutral synthesis sentence
Weekly tracking grid
- Day 1-2: recognition
- Day 3-4: controlled production
- Day 5-6: free production
- Day 7: revision and error log
Writing tip
