Idiom revision workflow (active use)

Goal

Turn idioms from "I understand them" into "I can use them naturally."

5-step weekly workflow

  1. Collect: choose 8-10 idioms by topic (work, social life, media)
  2. Contextualize: write one short sentence for each
  3. Contrast: write neutral equivalents
  4. Produce: create one mini dialogue and one short paragraph
  5. Review: revisit after 2-3 days and rewrite from memory

Example practice set

Idiom: den Nagel auf den Kopf treffen
Context sentence: "Mit seiner Kritik trifft er den Nagel auf den Kopf."
Neutral version: "Seine Kritik ist sehr präzise."

Quality checklist

  • Is the idiom natural for the context?
  • Is register appropriate?
  • Would a neutral alternative be better here?
  • Did you avoid overloading one text with too many idioms?

Production targets

  • A2/B1: 2 idioms per short dialogue
  • B2: 2-3 idioms per discussion paragraph
  • C1: selective idiom use with strong argument clarity

Writing tip

Active idiom mastery comes from repeated contextual writing, not memorizing lists in isolation.
