Sentence order (verb in position 2)

A1

Use a clear base pattern so your writing sounds natural from the first line.

Core rule

In German main clauses, the conjugated verb is usually in position 2.
This is one of the most important writing patterns at A1, because even simple vocabulary sounds much more natural when the sentence frame is correct.

Base patterns you can reuse

  • Subject + verb + rest
  • Time + verb + subject + rest
  • Place + verb + subject + rest

Why this matters in writing

Many learners write word-by-word from their first language and place the verb too late.
If your verb stays in position 2, your text becomes easier to read immediately, even if your vocabulary is basic.

Common correction patterns

  • ❌ Ich heute lerne Deutsch.

✅ Ich lerne heute Deutsch.

  • ❌ Heute ich lerne Deutsch.

✅ Heute lerne ich Deutsch.

  • ❌ In Berlin ich wohne seit zwei Jahren.

✅ In Berlin wohne ich seit zwei Jahren.

Mini practice model

Write 5 short sentences about your daily routine:

  1. Start with Ich ...
  2. Start with Heute ...
  3. Start with Am Morgen ...
  4. Start with Zu Hause ...
  5. Start with Nach der Arbeit ...

Then check: Is the conjugated verb still in position 2 in all 5 sentences?

Writing tip

Vary your sentence openings (subject, time, place), but keep the verb in position 2.
When editing, highlight the conjugated verb in each sentence to quickly spot order mistakes.
