Writing about past experiences

Goal

At A2, you should be able to describe a past event clearly: what happened, when, where, and how you felt.

Narrative sequence

1. Situation (time/place)
2. Main event
3. Reaction or result
4. Closing comment

Useful timeline markers

• letztes Wochenende
• gestern
• am Anfang
• dann
• danach
• am Ende

Model paragraph

Letztes Wochenende war ich mit meiner Familie in Hamburg.
Am Anfang haben wir die Stadt besichtigt und Fotos gemacht.
Dann sind wir in ein kleines Restaurant gegangen.
Danach haben wir eine Hafenrundfahrt gemacht, und das hat mir sehr gefallen.
Am Ende waren wir müde, aber glücklich.
Insgesamt war es ein sehr schönes Wochenende.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Jumping between events without timeline words
• Mixing present and past forms in every sentence
• Missing final sentence that summarizes the experience

Extension ideas

Add one sentence for each:

• a small problem (Es hat geregnet ...)
• a solution (Deshalb haben wir ...)
• a personal reflection (Ich habe gelernt, dass ...)

Writing tip

When writing about the past, sequence words are your best tool.
Even simple grammar sounds strong if the timeline is clear.
