Cohesion means your sentences connect naturally.
At B1 level, this is often the difference between "correct" writing and "good" writing.

Pronouns

  • er, sie, es, sie (plural)
  • Example: Ich habe einen Kurs gefunden. Er beginnt im Mai.

Demonstratives

  • dieser, diese, dieses
  • Example: Ich habe zwei Optionen. Diese ist günstiger.

Substitution

  • Das Problem ist wichtig. Es betrifft viele Menschen.
  • Wir brauchen eine neue Lösung. Diese Maßnahme könnte helfen.

Avoiding heavy repetition

Compare:

  • Weak: Die Stadt ist groß. Die Stadt ist teuer. Die Stadt hat viele Museen.
  • Better: Die Stadt ist groß. Sie ist auch teuer, aber sie hat viele Museen.

Reference clarity rule

When you use a pronoun, make sure the reference is clear.
If a sentence has two possible nouns, repeat the noun once to avoid confusion.

Editing pass for cohesion

  1. Circle repeated nouns.
  2. Replace unnecessary repeats with pronouns or substitutions.
  3. Re-read and check if every pronoun is clear.
