Balancing nominal style and readability

Goal

At C1, nominal style can make writing more formal and compact, but overuse reduces readability.

What nominal style looks like

• Verb-focused: Wir analysieren die Daten sorgfältig.
• Nominal style: Die sorgfältige Analyse der Daten ...

Both forms are useful. Strong C1 writing switches intentionally between them.

When nominal style helps

• Academic summaries
• Formal reports
• Administrative or policy writing

When to avoid overuse

• When sentences become too dense
• When agent/action becomes unclear
• When every sentence starts with abstract nouns

Rewrite examples

• Heavy: Die Durchführung der Evaluation der Maßnahmen erfolgte nach der Implementierung.

Clearer: Die Maßnahmen wurden nach der Implementierung evaluiert.

• Heavy: Die Verbesserung der Kommunikation führte zur Steigerung der Effizienz.

Balanced: Eine bessere Kommunikation erhöhte die Effizienz.

Practical balancing strategy

For each paragraph:

1. Keep one or two nominal structures for precision.
2. Use verb-based sentences for movement and clarity.
3. Check if each sentence still has a clear actor or process.

Writing tip

Advanced style is not maximal complexity.
It is controlled complexity: precise where needed, direct where helpful.
