Formal tone and register

B2

Adjust vocabulary and sentence style to context (formal vs informal).

Register shift

At B2, you should consciously choose tone based on audience and context.

Context-based language choices

Informal contexts

  • Friends, classmates, familiar colleagues
  • Shorter sentences, direct style, everyday vocabulary

Formal contexts

  • Institutions, employers, teachers, administration
  • Polite formulations, clear structure, neutral vocabulary

Tone checklist

  • Avoid slang in formal messages.
  • Prefer neutral verbs and polite modal forms.
  • Keep contractions and filler words minimal.
  • Use clear sentence boundaries and respectful closings.

Quick rewrite examples

  • Informal: Kannst du mir schnell helfen?
  • Formal: Könnten Sie mir bitte weiterhelfen?
  • Informal: Ich brauch die Info heute.
  • Formal: Ich benötige die Information noch heute.

Final review for register

Before sending, read your text once and ask:

  1. Is the greeting appropriate?
  2. Does any phrase sound too casual?
  3. Does the closing match the context?

Writing tip

Before sending, ask: "Would I write this to a teacher or employer?" If not, formalize it.
Consistent tone is more important than using complicated words.
