Useful connectors

Connectors make your text flow. Without them, writing feels like a list of isolated sentences.

Basic coordination

  • und, aber, denn, oder

Time sequence

  • zuerst, dann, danach, später, am Ende

Cause and contrast

  • deshalb, deswegen, trotzdem

Example paragraph

Ich wollte joggen gehen, aber es hat geregnet. Deshalb bin ich zu Hause geblieben.
Danach habe ich ein Video gemacht, und später habe ich mit meiner Freundin telefoniert.

How to improve paragraph flow

When writing 5-6 sentences:

  1. Add at least one time connector.
  2. Add one reason/result connector.
  3. Add one contrast connector if relevant.

This creates a clear timeline and logical structure for the reader.

Common overuse pattern

Many learners repeat und in every sentence.
Try replacing some of them with dann, deshalb, trotzdem, or aber to show clearer relationships.

Writing tip

In a paragraph, aim for at least 2-3 connectors to guide the reader.
If every sentence starts with "Ich ...", add a connector and vary the structure.
