Clause to noun phrase

Nominal style, or Nominalstil, is a hallmark of formal German, appearing in academic, legal, and journalistic texts. It works by converting verbal expressions into noun phrases, which allows complex ideas to be packaged compactly and impersonally. This is possible because German's case system lets noun phrases express logical relationships—such as cause, concession, or time—without a full clause. For example, a subordinate clause like weil die Preise steigen becomes the prepositional phrase wegen der steigenden Preise or the nominalization das Steigen der Preise. The subject of the original clause often becomes a genitive attribute, as in die Auswertung der Daten from die Daten auswerten.

A key usage note: the choice between a nominalized infinitive (das Steigen) and a derived noun (der Anstieg) depends on precision—derived nouns are often more specific and preferred in formal contexts.

• Aufgrund des starken Regens fiel das Spiel aus. (Due to the heavy rain, the game was cancelled.)

Register effect

Nominal style is typical of formal, impersonal registers, where it conveys objectivity and authority by omitting the agent. For instance, Die Prüfung erfolgte is more impersonal than Wir prüften. This style is prevalent in official documents, scientific reports, and news articles, where the focus is on the action or result rather than the actor. However, in spoken or informal language, nominal constructions sound stilted; native speakers prefer verbal clauses there. Learners should match the register to the context, using nominal style in formal writing but switching to verbal style in conversation.

A notable exception: some nominalizations, such as die Meinung or die Frage, are so lexicalized that they are used in all registers without sounding formal.

Balance

While nominal style is efficient, overusing it creates heavy "noun chains" that are hard to read, such as die Durchführung der Analyse der Ergebnisse der Studie. The human brain processes verbal clauses more easily because they follow the natural subject-verb-object pattern. Therefore, a balance between nominal and verbal structures is essential for clarity. Use nominal phrases for key concepts or to avoid repetition, and verbal clauses for central actions or explanations. A good guideline is to aim for about 60% verbal and 40% nominal structures, depending on the genre.

A common mistake is creating long chains of genitive attributes; instead, use compound nouns or prepositions to compact them, e.g., die Analyse der Untersuchungsergebnisse rather than die Analyse der Ergebnisse der Untersuchung.
